A new drug called sildenafil is approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in people with diabetes and benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). But experts are unsure what the new drug will do for people with erectile dysfunction.
The agency said it is not sure whether sildenafil could help people with PAH who have trouble getting or keeping an erection when they're sexually aroused.
The drug is known as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis when a man gets aroused.
The agency said the FDA approval of sildenafil comes on the heels of other similar drugs for pulmonary arterial hypertension and BPH.
In May, the agency also approved a second drug for erectile dysfunction called.
The agency said it is not certain whether sildenafil works in PAH but it is believed to have effects on people who take it.
Other drugmakers have also made similar claims about sildenafil's effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction.
Some of the drugs include Viagra and Cialis, but none have been approved by the FDA for PAH.
A spokesman for Pfizer said the agency did not comment on a planned press conference on the drug.
